Zhōngxué shēnghuó — School Life

Subjects, timetables, exams and opinions about all three. Students compare their own school with a Chinese one — and Grade 5’s comparison pattern turns out to be exactly the tool the job needs.

Opinion plus reason — the Grade 6 sentence

我最喜欢科学,因为很有意思。

Wǒ zuì xǐhuan kēxué, yīnwèi hěn yǒu yìsi. — “I like science most, because it’s very interesting.”

A bare opinion is a Grade 1 sentence. An opinion with 因为 attached is the standard expected from here to Grade 8.

Cultural connection

The exam at the end of everything

The 高考 — the national university entrance exam — is taken over two or three days at eighteen and substantially determines which university a student can attend. Construction near exam halls pauses; traffic is diverted; parents wait outside. Its weight shapes school life for years beforehand, and it’s a real source of the 压力 in this unit’s vocabulary. Twelve-year-olds find this genuinely startling, and it makes for an honest discussion about what different systems choose to measure — without needing to decide which is better.

Unit 2 progress check

A light, no-pressure way to see what’s sticking:

  • Can your child describe their timetable for one day?
  • Do they attach 因为 to an opinion without being asked?
  • Can they make a correct 比 comparison?

The reason clause is the habit worth building. From here on, an unexplained opinion should feel incomplete to them.
