Los Colores
The Colors
Colors are everywhere a kindergartener looks — which makes them perfect second words. Students learn eight colors across two lessons and start answering their very first Spanish question: ¿De qué color es?
Unit objectives
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
- Recognize and name eight colors in Spanish
- Answer ¿De qué color es? with a color word
- Point to objects of a named color on request
- Repeat color words with clear pronunciation

Colors of papel picado
In Mexico, streets and parties are decorated with papel picado — bright cut-paper banners in every color students are learning. Many Spanish-speaking countries decorate celebrations with vivid color: bright woven textiles in Guatemala, painted houses in Puerto Rico and Argentina. Ask your child: which papel picado color would you pick?
Unit 2 progress check
A light, no-pressure way to see what is sticking:
- Can your child name four colors when you point to objects?
- Do they answer ¿De qué color es? with a Spanish color word?
- Can they find something rojo and something azul in the room?
Two out of three is a great place to move on — everything spirals back in later units.
