我的学校和社区
Wǒ de xuéxiào hé shèqū — My School and Community
The year the world gets bigger than the living room. Students name their school, their week, their neighbourhood — and learn the single idea that makes Chinese characters stop feeling random: radicals.
By the end of Grade 2…
- Speaking: describe their school day and ask a classmate about theirs
- Listening: understand short spoken descriptions of familiar places
- Reading: recognise 100 characters and read simple labelled sentences
- Writing: write 55 characters and copy short sentences into grid boxes
- Structure: tell the time, name the days, and say where something is
The idea that changes everything
Characters aren’t 100 unrelated drawings — they’re built from parts. Once a student sees that 氷 means “something to do with water,” whole families of characters stop being memorisation:
河 river · 海 sea · 洽 to swim · 洬 to bathe
Unit 9 is devoted to this, and it is the most important unit in the elementary years.

Chinese never says “three book” — it says “three volume book,” 三本书. English does this too (“three slices of bread”), Chinese just does it for everything. Grade 2 introduces four: 个 general, 本 books, 只 animals, 张 flat things. When in doubt, 个 is understood.
This is the hard year — that’s expected
Grade 2 is where character writing goes from novelty to work, and it’s the most common point for a child to say Chinese is too hard. It almost always eases in Unit 9, when radicals turn memorising into reasoning. If your student is struggling in the autumn, hold the line — and consider doing Unit 9 early.
